ALWAYS ACOUSTIC™ ALBUM REVIEW

Monday, November 24, 2008
By Aaron Keker

Three years ago, Nickelback released All The Right Reasons and the album was so successful that it just fell several million short of the coveted diamond status.

Naturally, one would believe that Nickelback feels some pressure with their latest release Dark Horse, which was released on November 18th on Roadrunner Records. But do they?

Nickelback has a reputation of being heavier rock musicians, but they have never been afraid to release lower key ballads like “How You Remind Me,” “Too Bad,”  “Someday,” “Photograph,” “Far Away,” “If Everyone Cared” and “Rockstar.”

In fact, Nickelback has even released “Photograph,” “How You Remind Me,” “Someday” and “Too Bad” acoustically on the album Rolling Stone Original, which is available on Rhapsody. Yes, Rhapsody music is iPod compatible!

Some of my favorite songs from Dark Horse are “Something in Your Mouth,” “Gotta Be Somebody,” “I’d Come for You,” “Next Go Around,” “Just to Get High,” “Never Gonna Be Alone,” “If Today Was Your Last Day” and “This Afternoon.”

If someone said that they were going to hit me over the head with an acoustic guitar unless I confessed which three Nickelback songs would be their most popular from Dark Horse, what would I do?

I could be hit with the guitar and have a concussion similar to tripping and falling on the playground rocks in sixth grade. But why? It hurt back then and I am sure being hit with a guitar is just as painful as the playground rocks. So, here you go.

I believe the concussion saving songs, which are lower key, are “Gotta Be Somebody,” “I’d Come For You” and “Never Gonna Be Alone.” What’s not to like with the heavily influenced drum smashing on “Gotta Be Somebody” to trying to get back the love you lost on “I’d Come for You” and lastly the acoustically based intro of “Never Gonna Be Alone” that gradually accelerates into an electrified presence to be reckoned with. You might as well hit me with the guitar because there is one additional song, which is “If Today Was Your Last Day.”

The dark horse off the album might just be “Just to Get High,” which is about a friend’s drug addiction that takes him so far off the edge he steals from his mother and puts a knife to a woman’s neck to nourish his high. Maybe the song will be featured on Celebrity Rehab 3?

Finally, if you are a Nickelback fanatic who enjoys both their heavier and lower key ballads then Dark Horse is a must have for you. I would like to see “Something in Your Mouth,” “Gotta Be Somebody,” “I’d Come for You,” “Just to Get High,” “Never Gonna Be Alone” and “If Today Was Your Last Day” available acoustically on iTunes. Also, if you purchase Dark Horse digitally at Walmart, you will receive the bonus song “This Afternoon” (Walmart Soundcheck). I am really excited to hear some of Nickelback’s latest songs in concert. Below is the album song list for Dark Horse.

Dark Horse:

1. “Something in Your Mouth”
2. “Burn it to the Ground”
3. “Gotta Be Somebody”
4. “I’d Come for You”
5. “Next Go Round”
6. “Just to Get High”
7. “Never Gonna Be Alone”
8. “Shakin’ Hands”
9. “S.E.X.”
10. “If Today Was Your Last Day”
11. “This Afternoon”

Dark Horse (Walmart Exclusive):

12. “This Afternoon” (Walmart Soundcheck)
