VIC THEATRE, Chicago - A little more than two years ago, Daughtry performed at Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for more than 15,000 vociferous fans.
Now imagine taking those 15,000 fans and combining that energy into about 1,400 at the Vic Theatre and that is how energetic the audience was that evening.
Yes, Daughtry performed at the same time as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Tool at Lollapalooza.
In a tweet, Chris Daughtry remarked, “We friggin LOVE you Chicago!!!!! You guys gave us so much energy and love tonight!!!! We will never forget tonight!!!”
Chris was correct, the evening was unforgettable and it started with the audiences' enthusiasm and ended with Daughtry’s impeccable performance.
The audience displayed such energetic enthusiasm that if the hanging paint fragments could fall from the ceiling by just the vibration of the peoples’ voices than some of them would’ve looked like they were auditioning for the Blue Man Group.
David Hodges warmed up the audience for thirty minutes. Around 9:00 p.m., Daughtry entered the theatre with the strobes flashing and Chris belted into the first lyrical line from “Every Time You Turn Around.” As Chris Daughtry reached the chorus, the audience sang alongside him. The moment the song concluded a boisterous ovation could be heard from the sold out Vic Theatre.
Daughtry performed a majority of their set list from Leave This Town. The set list included “Every Time You Turn Around,” “Ghost of Me,” “Open Up Your Eyes,” “September,” “Life After You,” “Supernatural,” “You Don’t Belong” and their latest hit “No Surprise.” I believe Daughtry could have continued to play songs like “Call Your Name,” “Tennessee Line” and “Traffic Light” and then mix in a few older hit songs without missing a beat.
Instead, Daughtry performed older hit songs like “It’s Not Over,” “Crashed,” “Feels Like Tonight,” “There and Back Again” and “Home.”
One of the other memorable moments of the evening was when Chris Daughtry performed an intimate solo version of “Open Up Your Eyes.” Imagine the possibility if he would have stripped it down acoustically? The paint fragments may have fallen.
Besides just singing the chorus, the audience provided additional background vocals on “Every Time You Turn Around,” “It’s Not Over,” “No Surprise,” “Open Up Your Eyes,” “Feels Like Tonight” and “Home.”
The audiences’ enthusiasm even energized Chris Daughtry. Chris decided to risk a near heat stroke by jumping up and down on “There and Back Again” in the 90º + heat inside the Vic Theatre. The moment Chris said, “Jump on three,” the entire audience near the stage started to jump.
I have never seen an audience at the Vic Theatre as animated as they were for Daughtry. This includes some of the best animated audiences that I have ever heard for artists like Amy Winehouse, Seether, The Bravery and the Kaiser Chiefs. It was like having 15,000 vociferous fans at the Vic when in actuality there were only about 1,400. The audiences’ enthusiasm and Daughtry’s impeccable performance were unforgettable!
