ALWAYS ACOUSTIC® ALBUM REVIEW

Monday, September 20, 2010
By Aaron Keker

The album artwork is devilishly appealing; the porn star is dancing and the ballads are dismantling emotional verses.

“Sometimes I write the best songs; find the best words on my darkest days,” quote from Matt Walst from My Darkest Days (aka MDD).

If Matt can write emotional lyrics on songs like “Every Lie,” “Save Me,” “Can’t Forget You” and “Goodbye” on his darkest days, imagine the possibilities of Matt’s writing on his happiest days.

Besides co-writing a majority of the songs on MDD’s debut album, Matt Walst is also credited with co-writing songs “Scared” and “Let You Down” from Three Days Grace’s self-titled album that was released back on July 22, 2003. Matt’s brother Brad Walst is bassist and co-founder of the platinum rock band Three Days Grace.

Although My Darkest Days possesses a close relationship with Three Days Grace, “It’s definitely been a struggle, we’ve had ups and downs,” says Doug Oliver.

A struggle that has finally ended as MDD will be releasing their debut album My Darkest Days at various online and digital retail stores on September 21, 2010 via Mercury Records. The album was produced by Joey Moi and Chad Kroeger.

My Darkest Days consists of vocalist Matt Walst, guitarist Sal Costa, bassist Brendan McMillan and drummer Doug Oliver.

The album artwork is devilishly appealing; the porn star is dancing and the ballads are dismantling emotional lyrics. There are four different album versions out there. iTunes contains “Fucked Up Situation,” while Napster contains two of my favorite songs in “WithoutYou” and “Still Worth Fighting For.” I hope that these songs eventually make their way on the three other album releases because these two songs would definitely balance out the album emotionally.

Although those songs are absent from the iTunes and Amazon versions of My Darkest Days, the album still stands on its own volition. Jessie James provides additional vocals on the Duran Duran cover of “Come Undone.” “Set it on Fire” features a modern rock sound mixed with some smooth reggae. Ludacris, Zakk Wylde and Chad Kroeger provide additional vocals on the two released versions of “Porn Star Dancing” on iTunes and Napster.

Chad Kroeger and Kevin “Chief” Zaruk should be credited once again for discovering a hidden rock gem in My Darkest Days. MDD is not only signed to Mercury Records in the U.S. and 604 Records in Canada, but they have managed to open for bands like Three Days Grace, Hinder, Theory of a Deadman and Papa Roach. According, to Sal, “This is only the beginning… We’re here to stay.” I have to agree with Sal. Below is the song list from My Darkest Days.

My Darkest Days:

1. “Move Your Body”
2. “Porn Star Dancing” (feat. Zakk Wylde)
