ALWAYS ACOUSTIC® ALBUM REVIEW

Wednesday, May 18, 2011
By Aaron Keker

On “Pass Slowly,” Shaun Morgan’s vocals are submissively restrained that gently rise into civil disobedience and eventually spreads into emotional chaos.

Seether may not do this consciously, but they released their fifth studio album on May 17th with a title that is longer than its four predecessors.

For the Daily Double, what is a seven letter sentence for Seether’s fifth studio album? Well Mr. Trebek, what is Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray.

Shaun Morgan summed up the album best when he explained, “I didn’t scream very much [on the album]. For some of the songs, the sentiment behind the lyric wasn’t angry, therefore to sing it in an angry way didn’t make any sense to me.”
If you have a sadist and enjoy being yelled at or a vocalist screaming emotionally, you will definitely enjoy Seether’s “Fur Cue.” “Fur Cue” can be compared to the “F*ck It” rollercoaster harmonies.

Just seeing “Master of Disaster” listed on the album a person is inclined to make a comparison to Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” Although both songs are awesome, you can’t make any comparison between the two because “Puppets” is recorded at a higher tempo than “Disaster.”

Next time you see Shaun Morgan, tell him “Thanks” because one of the best songs on Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray is “Tonight” and it came very close to not making it onto the album. The story goes one morning, before dawn, Shaun Morgan was in a really good mood and he completely changed the lyrics into positive ones. With only two days remaining in the studio, Seether hurried to record that song.

On “Pass Slowly,” Shaun Morgan’s vocals are submissively restrained that gently rise into civil disobedience and eventually spreads into emotional chaos. “Pass Slowly” will have a difficult time surpassing the popular ballad “Broken,” but it will provide some fierce competition.

Seether held onto their strings by releasing an unbelievable album that contains a softer side to Shaun Morgan’s vocals. For those of you who may be disappointed on Shaun’s softer side, what do you want him to do? Fake it on songs that aren’t angry? Seether is giving back to its faithful fans and anyone who has purchased a ticket to any of their headlining shows will receive a free copy of Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray. How quickly the album becomes platinum is up to you?
